I did this last weekend. Not that anything out of the ordinary happened. Yes, there was breaking news of over 10 Kenyans passing away due to road accidents. Very very sad situation but we drivers in Kenya never learn.

A common excuse as to why we shy away from Entrepreneurship at young ages or any age has been lack of experience. Almost everybody I have heard give their two cents on Entrepreneurship have either affirmed that they got employed first before they went it alone or proclaimed they will seek employment first before pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams. Their reasons for this were two-thronged – to get experience and save enough money. The question I am asking you today is; can they make it anyway? I believe they can!

I’ve tried as much as possible not to merge my personal affairs with my blogging one. So far I’ve succeeded. But sometime they tend to converge, especially on twitter [a micro blogging platform]. I’ve contemplated creating another blog for my personal journals, but I’m too lazy for that too. What’s with all this social engagements online? With twitter, facebook and linkedln I think I’ve had enough of social networking sites. I need more offline contacts and I’m not so good when it comes to sharing matters close to the heart online, mine or any other.

I’ve been looking at the back pages of the papers more frequently recently. And there’s one theme that has me stumped.
Virtually all advertisements for IT manager positions require the applicant to be able to set up a LAN. Or WAN. Or have certifications like MCSE, cisco and N+? I wrote it off initially as the kind of thing small companies would do. You know, those companies we read about where the IT function reports to the Finance manager. It would be [somewhat] understandable for such guys. But to my astonishment, even large[er] enterprises list this as a requirement.

Traditionally, CV are one, two and three pages. (In some industries and countries more than four pages are acceptable, even expected!). While I don’t have a concrete answer I’ll provide you with the information you need to decide which length works best for you.

You know everything and everyone in the office, from the CEO to the tea girl. People come to you when someone skips work, or runs out to make a phone call, because you’ll know what it’s about. Your life is an open book, and in your mind, so is everyone else’s. The workplace is your turf, here you are king, and nobody can mess with you, because you know all their dirty little secrets, and they know you like to use them.

Careers have come a long way since the days of Myers, Briggs and Freud. These days, personality profiling is a common part of the interviewing process. Employers have began to accept that some character traits are preferable for certain jobs. For instance, fussy people make good accountants, because of their attention to detail, while outgoing people are better suited to sales, field work or PR. Shy or timid people would probably thrive best if they worked with machines.

I was riding in a matatu today when a traffic officer flagged us down. He had this stern, unreadable expression on his face, and I knew we were in for trouble. The officer peeped into the matatu, first at the front seats and then at the back. He didn’t seem to find what he was looking for, so he walked round the matatu, staring into the windows. The driver and conductor looked worried, because the officer didn’t say anything or ask any questions.
After a few minutes, he stuck his hand into the matatu and dropped a Tusky’s paper bag. A woman in the matatu picked the bag. The officer pulled his hand out of the matatu and waved us by, so we drove off.

In the past five years, the workplace has changed dramatically. People no longer hold their jobs for life. The average employee shifts every two years, and sometimes workers even change industries. This is possible because the workforce is more versatile and less specialized, so a person who is trained in one career can comfortably make a transition to a completely different field.
