Functional Title: Migration Health Technical Intern
Grade: Intern @ $500 / Month
Duty Station: Nairobi (Kenya)
Duration of Assignment: Six Months (February – July 2010)
1) Background
IOM Mission with Regional Functions (MRF) is based in Nairobi, and covers Kenya,Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia.The incumbent will be placed within the Migration Health Department (MHD) in IOM Nairobi. This unit works multisectorally to strengthen government-driven health systems for migrants and other mobile populations in Kenya and the region. The programme comprises the areas of Health Promotion & Assistants for Migrants, Migration Health for Crisis-Affected Populations, and Migration Health Assessments and Travel Assistance.
Within IOM’s health strategy, IOM assists governments and their partners in the comprehensive management of migration health through four strategic pillars, namely: 1) service delivery and capacity building; 2) research, surveillance, and information sharing; 3) advocacy for policy development; and 4) strengthening national and international coordination and collaboration.
Presently, the programme is involved in pilot programming to support access to health services for irregular or undocumented migrants in the urban setting, strengthening basis health systems for internally displaced populations, and developing a framework to address HIV among mobile populations.

2) Job Description
Under the overall supervision of Regional Representative, direct supervision of the
Regional Migration Health Assessment Coordinator, and the daily technical supervision of
the Health Programme Officer, and in collaboration with IOM colleagues, the incumbent
will provide assistance in programme development, publicity, and project implementation
in the Kenya health programme.
Specific responsibilities will include:
1. Familiarize him/herself with IOM service areas and read the major guiding
documents for each area as well as examples of projects developed and
implemented under each area, with particular focus on migration health;
2. Familiarize him/herself with IOM’s activities related to health promotion and
assistance for crisis-affected populations.
3. Travel to field sites to undertake rapid assessments of the needs of communities
in Kenya affected by internal displacement, particularly where IOM has
operational presence.
4. Produce rapid assessment reports and donor appeals for input of IOM colleagues
– particularly on rural health system strengthen, water and sanitation,
psychosocial programming, community health care, and surveillance / control of
communicable diseases.
5. Search for and identify available funding opportunities to support the
implementation of the health programme framework, and assist in contacting
potential partners and donors.
6. Participate actively in stakeholder meetings in areas related to programme
objectives, and participate in internal IOM coordinating mechanism, to identify
programming opportunities.
7. Assist in developing other funding proposals through undertaking background
research and preparing initial drafts according to required formats.
8. Draft press releases and information sheets describing the programme, manage
the digital photo library, and provide content for the IOM website.
9. Perform any additional duties that may be assigned by supervisors.
3) Personal Development
The incumbent will acquire understanding of thematic areas associated with migrant
health. The incumbent will acquire technical knowledge in the area of programme
development, including identification of programmatic needs and resource
mobilization. The incumbent will gain in-situ experience in working in an international
multi-cultural environment, with an intergovernmental organization.
4) Required Qualifications
University undergraduate degree in social science, public health, international
relations or development studies.
Completion or near-completion of postgraduate degree in public health,
epidemiology, social science, anthropology, international development, or similar
field.
Exceptional writing skills, with demonstrated ability to draft and edit technical
documents.
Working or volunteer experience with NGOs or international organizations an
advantage.
5) Skills and Competencies

Excellent communication skills.
